Batata Vada | Indian Street Food | Simple Recipe | मुंबई के बटाटा वडा की सीक्रेट रेसिपी | Aloo Vada

Batata Vada is the maharashtras famous street food . Here I will make batata vada in just few easy steps, with a easily available ingredients .

Batata Vada (Marathi: बटाटा वडा) is a popular Indian vegetarian fast food in Maharashtra, India. It literally means potato fritters. The name “Batata” means potato in Portuguese who introduced potatoes in India. It consists of a potato mash patty coated with chick pea flour, then deep-fried and served hot with chutney. The vada is a thick sphere, around two or three inches in diameter.

Although Maharashtrian in origin, Batata Vada is gaining popularity in the rest of India as well.In West Bengal, it’s known as “aalur chop”.


For Potato Stuffing :

  • 2 medium size potatoes
  • 3-4 Green chillies
  • 1 medium size onion
  • 1 inch Ginger
  • 2 Garlic
  • 1/2 Tsp Cumin seeds(Jeera)
  • 1/2 Tsp Mustard Seeds(Rai)
  • 1/2 Tsp Salt
  • 1/2 Tsp Turmeric powder
  • 1/2 Tsp Kashmiri red powder(optional)
  • 1 Tsp Coriander seeds
  • 1 Tsp Fennel seeds(Saunf)
  • 2 Tsp Oil
  • a pinch of Hing
  • Coriander leaves

For Outer covering :

  • 1 bowl Gram flour(Besan)
  • 1/2 tsp Salt
  • 1/2 tsp Turmeric powder(Haldi)
  • a pinch of Hing
  • 1/4 Tsp baking soda (khan ka soda)

Oil for frying
some Green chillies


1 Take 2 potatoes . Boil,peel and mash it .Now heat the oil in the pan . Pop up cumin seed and Mustard seeds . Add grated garlic-ginger paste . Add coriander seeds and fennel . Add finely chopped onion and green chillies.

2 Fry the onion in medium flam till gets golden brown . Add salt , turmeric powder,kashmiri red chilli powder and a pinch of hing .Mix all together .Now Add boiled ,mashed potato and mix it well. Finely garnish with the finely chopped coriander leaves .Potato stuffing is ready .

3 For outer covering , add gram flour (besan) , salt , turmeric powder , a pinch of hing and baking soda(khane ka soda) . Mix all the ingredients together with water to get the smooth paste .
Mix it properly so that no lumps will form .

4 In one small Saucepan ,Heat the oil in medium flame . Make balls with the potato stuffing and dip in the gram flour paste . Cover the potato stuffing with the gram flour paste . Deep fry in oil till gets golden brown coloured . Also fry some green chillies .Batata vadas are ready .

5 Serve hot with fried green chillies ,mint green chutney and tamarind chutney .
